Sticky Notes are my Thing

Dear Friend,

Are you a list person? I am a list person. Sticky notes are among my favorite Costco purchases (they come in bright colors, different sizes, and there’s SO MANY OF THEM?!). Anyway, I write myself notes, affirmations, reminders, things to do, shopping lists; I use them as labels, I have secret stashes of them throughout my home and office, I even carry some in my bag. One might describe me as…obsessive.

But lists. Lists have a special place in my heart. I’ve been making lists my whole life. When I was a kid, I’d have one of my parents just sit and write lists. Lists of food items. Lists of colors. Lists of holiday-related things. Lists, lists, lists. As an adult, I write to-do lists. And I LOVE crossing things off my list and throwing sticky notes away! I use different color stickys for different areas of life. I use colored pens to indicate different things. I’m into it and I love gettin’ shit done!

so many Sticky notes, to-do lists, motivation, feel better, show up

And sometimes…I’m overwhelmed by how many sticky notes are around my house. You know what I mean, right? Well, I have a secret: I’ve finally discovered a way to MANAGE my to-do lists.

  1. Write your to-do list.

  2. Take note of which items feel absolutely DREADFUL.

  3. Take note of which items feel easy or fun or eh, no big deal, but still need to be done.

  4. Do those first.

I know, I know: Some things are more important! Some things take more time! Some things HAVE to get done! I know. They will. But start with the easier items on the list and feel better, first. You’ll feel better because you got to cross a few things off the list. And they didn’t take a lot of time or energy, so that makes you feel pretty good too. And now you’re gettin’ shit done, which makes you feel like you’re someone who has their shit together. And now you’re tackling a bigger thing on the to-do list because you’re a badass.

And yeah, fine, sometimes not everything gets done or sometimes we really do need to focus and get that one big thing done. But if I have several days in a row that I simply got shit done and I felt better while doing it? That’s a win. I’m a winner.

So…what’s the point?

Your only job is to feel better.

Find ways that work for you. I’m a sticky note person - sticky notes are my THING. But maybe a digital list on your phone makes you feel better. Maybe you set alarms for things. Maybe tackling the big things first is actually what makes you feel better. Maybe you do things first thing in the morning. Or on your lunch break. Or late at night. As long as it makes YOU feel better.

When you feel better, you show up better.

And I’m here for that.

I love you.

Your friend, Alexandra Kay
